Climate Forward SLC
In 2025, Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Sustainability Department launched Climate Forward SLC, a strategic plan to update the city’s climate strategy. This initiative focuses on achieving net-100% renewable electricity by 2030 and an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The plan emphasizes actions that reduce emissions, lower costs, create jobs, and build healthier, more resilient neighborhoods.
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
Salt Lake City has made significant strides in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency. The city’s Department of Public Utilities operates a co-generation facility that produces nearly 6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 4,300 tons each year. Additionally, the city has committed to designing and constructing all new municipal buildings to meet LEED Gold standards, ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability.
Transportation and Air Quality
To improve air quality and reduce vehicle emissions, Salt Lake City has installed over 291 miles of bicycle lanes, encouraging alternative transportation methods. The city’s fleet includes 404 alternative-fueled vehicles, with 54 being all-electric, and the airport operates an additional 270 alternative-fueled vehicles, including 68 fully electric ones. Public electric vehicle charging stations have also been installed to support the transition to cleaner vehicles community-wide.
Urban Forestry and Green Spaces
Recognizing the importance of green spaces in urban environments, Salt Lake City has undertaken projects to enhance its urban forestry. In July 2026, the city announced plans to plant over 400 trees along the 9 Line bike trail and Fleet Block public park. This initiative aims to provide shade, lower temperatures, and improve air quality along key city routes.

Salt Lake City actively engages the community in sustainability efforts. The SLCgreen program offers resources on waste and recycling, food systems, air quality, and sustainable business practices.
