Salt Lake City is evaluating the future of the Hive Pass, a discounted public transit program, as part of Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s proposed budget plan. The Hive Pass offers residents unlimited access to Utah Transit Authority (UTA) services, including buses, TRAX, and FrontRunner, for $42 monthly or $475 annually.
Despite its affordability, the program has seen limited adoption, with approximately 400 residents currently utilizing the pass. This low participation has raised concerns about the program’s effectiveness and marketing efforts. Discontinuing the Hive Pass could result in over $400,000 in savings for the city, funds that could be redirected to other essential services.
Mayor Mendenhall’s budget proposal also includes a significant property tax increase to address rising costs. The City Council is expected to finalize the budget by June 30. Public hearings are scheduled for May 19 and June 2, providing residents an opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed changes.
It’s important to note that UTA continues to offer free transit passes to Salt Lake City School District students, faculty, and staff, underscoring ongoing efforts to maintain transit affordability for key community members.
