Salt Lake City is evaluating the future of the Hive Pass, a discounted public transit program, as part of Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s proposed budget plan. The Hive Pass offers residents unlimited access to Utah Transit Authority (UTA) services, including buses, TRAX, and FrontRunner, for $42 monthly or $475 annually.
Despite its affordability, the program has seen limited adoption, with approximately 400 residents currently utilizing the pass. This low participation has raised questions about the program’s effectiveness and marketing efforts. Discontinuing the Hive Pass could result in savings exceeding $400,000 for the city.
Mayor Mendenhall’s budget proposal also includes a significant property tax increase to address rising costs. The City Council is expected to finalize the budget by June 30. Meanwhile, UTA continues to provide free transit passes to Salt Lake City School District students, faculty, and staff, underscoring ongoing efforts to maintain transit affordability for the community.
